Your account

Delete your account

You can close your SwalaSMS account yourself, from the app or from the web portal. Here is where the button is, and exactly what happens when you press it.

From the mobile app

Open Account → Security, scroll to Danger zone, and tap Delete my account. You will be asked for your password, for a code from your authenticator app if you use two-step verification, and to type DELETE. The account is closed immediately and the app signs itself out.

From the web portal

Sign in at https://swalasms.com, open Account → Close account, and follow the same steps. The page shows how many contacts, groups and templates the account holds before you confirm.

If you cannot sign in

Email sms@swalatech.com from the address on the account and ask us to close it. We will verify that the account is yours before we do anything, and we will confirm in writing once it is done. We aim to complete these within 30 days.

What closing does

  • Your sign-in stops working immediately, and every signed-in session on every phone and browser ends.
  • The account disappears from the service — it cannot send, and nobody can sign in to it.
  • Your email address and phone number are released, so you can open a new account with them whenever you like.
  • Connected Google accounts are disconnected and the access we hold is revoked with Google at the same time.
  • Any unused SMS credits go with the account and are not refundable.

What we keep, and why

We would rather say this plainly than bury it: closing your account does not erase what is in it. Your contacts, groups, templates, sender IDs, messages, delivery reports, credits and payment history are retained after closure, on an account nobody can sign in to and that only our administrators can read.

The reason is that we are answerable for the messages sent through us. As a licensed sender of SMS we have to be able to say who sent a message if a network operator, the TCRA, a court or the police asks — and answering that properly means being able to produce the account, not a summary of it. Our lawful basis is that legal obligation, not your consent, which is why it applies after you have gone. Purchase and payment records are separately required by Tanzanian tax rules.

If you want your data erased instead

You can ask us to erase it rather than retain it. Email sms@swalatech.com from the address on the account and say so. We will verify the account is yours, erase everything that is not held under a specific legal or tax obligation, and tell you in writing what had to stay and why. We aim to complete these within 30 days.

Our privacy policy explains the rest of how we handle your data.
